Intended Major and How Interest Was Developed

My intended major course at University of California is Applied Mathematics (a combination of Mathematics and Economics). This is primarily a Mathematics degree with Mathematics as a substantial subject. I developed the interest for this subject primarily because since my childhood I desired to become a business leader in future owning personal businesses world over. Secondly, I developed the interest in Applied Mathematics due to my endless interest in making valid economic decision to spear head my business objectives in times to come. Therefore, by studying a combination of mathematics and economics I will be able to appreciate, understand, and comprehend models of economic planning in business operations and other production management. The mathematics component being a tool of analyzing a given situation, and acquaintance with economics (Aarhus Universitet. 2009), will assist me in developing appropriate, relevant, and pertinent models in solving problems linked to my global businesses. With the world economic recession today, I thought of something I could do to shape the economic situation of the society around me, and resolved therefore that applied mathematics is the way forward. Applied mathematics will give me the broad academic insight and methodical, analytical, or systematic skills, thereby, making me capable of understanding a number of issues and decisions that subsist in the field and world of economics.

Experience Description

At age of 22 I was managing a company in Korea which involved in manufacturing of office items, such as mouse pads. I had employed two people to assist me in running the business, unfortunately, at the end of the day I could not make a substantial profit from the business, and little amount realized was for clearing wages and rental bills. Another setback was taking economical decisions as an unskilled manager to realize more profit than losses for the survival of the company. The demands from the product manager were just but enormous for me to handle, as I was required to make positive decisions that would realize only the profit figures in the company. A particular loss could be greeted by harsh reception from the product manger questioning my economic decisions in the company.

Therefore, as a young business manager I felt challenged and thought the only solution to over come these problems, tribulation, and troubles was to study or major in applied mathematics (amalgamation of mathematics and economics). This will assist me in tackling the actual and real business oriented issues, mathematics for instance, will help me analyze a given situation, and familiarity with economics and application of economic theories in the real business world.
